Women who are pregnant or have a child under the age of four could be eligible for Healthy Start Vouchers to help buy some basic foods including vegetables. This important scheme provides the vouchers to spend with local retailers. Pregnant women and children over one and under four years old can get one £3.10 voucher per week. Children under one year old can get two £3.10 vouchers (£6.20 per week.worth up to £6.20 per week.
Recent changes to the application process have made it easier to apply and Food Durham partners including Durham County Council, NHS and Citizens Advice have been working to try and increase their uptake in County Durham. Fruit and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and fibre and regular consumption from an early age has many benefits including helping with a child’s healthy growth and development, protection against disease and strengthening a child’s immune system to help fight illnesses.
We want to help people get the most from their vouchers by promoting seasonal vegetables and fruit, cooking from scratch and supporting independent retailers. More information about the scheme can be found here.
