The County Durham Food Charter was signed by 35 organisations, businesses and individuals on Thursday 19th September 2013. Eighteen people signed in the Town Hall in Durham at the launch of the Charter, at the same time giving a pledge to do one thing in support of its aims. Those signing included the County Council, Durham University, Durham Wildlife Trust, the North Pennines AONB, the NFU, and local food businesses. The highlight was the signing by two children representing Evenwood Primary School who completely stole the limelight with a pledge to start an allotment at the school as part of a newly forming community food project.
After the event at the Town Hall and marketplace, which took place alongside the monthly Farmers’ Market, the Charter was taken to venues around the county by cycle and electric car.
